1. Comprehension
Can you find a solution without knowing the problem? Certainly not! How can you find a solution, if you are not clear about the problem itself? As in real life, in mathematics too, the solution of a problem lies in grasping the problem properly. If you are able to see through a problem, you can certainly see though its solution.
2. Speed
Speed means your calculating speed. Higher the speed, more proficient you are! If you want to be more skilled in math, you will have to improve upon you calculating speed.
3. Accuracy
The calculations you have done MUST be 100% accurate to reach the right solution. If you have comprehended the problem properly and solved it at a nice speed but you are not 100% accurate in calculations then all will be a waste
All the above three pre-requisits of your efficiency can be sharpened with practice and labor. A little more hardwork can do wonders.
Shortcuts are double edged knife. Generally in life shortcuts are dangerous. But at certain places these shortcuts can make your life pleasantly easy. Using shortcuts in math can enhance your calculating speed as well as accuracy. This article gives to shortcuts while you are multiplying.
Applying Tactics in Multiplication
While multiplying, we may also use certain tactics to find the answer quickly.
Example 1
89 x 8
For making the above calculation simple we may do as mentioned below
89 x 8
= (90 -1) x 8
= 720 - 8
= 712.
But avoid using a minus sign as far as possible while bifurcating a number. Remember, adding is always easier as well as less prone to mistakes than subtraction. (By the way, do you knwo that computer knows only one arithmatical operatio i.e. "ADDITION" and for all other operations it just manipulates it adding skill?).
Any way... the above example can also be solved as follows:
89 x 8
= (80 + 9) x 8 Now we have used "80+9" in place of "90-1"
= 640 + 72
= 712
Example 2
65 x 12
= (60 + 5) x 12
= 720 + 60
= 780.
OR
65 x 12
= 65 x (10+2)
= 650+130
= 780
Example 3
34 x 9
= (30 + 4) x 9
= 270 + 36
= 306
Example 4
312 x 14
= (300 + 10 +2) x 14
= 4200+140+28
= 4368
With a little practice you will be devising your own ways of such manipulations to get the answer quickly and accurately.
The above mentioned methods make the things simpler and more accurate, the only thing required is applying these tactics regularly while doing such calculations. So start using this method in your real life to improve your calculating speed.
